You can even create a shortcut to extend the desktop any time you want. Just launch the Secondary Monitor state dialog box and select the option which reads Enable Secondary Monitor in Extended Mode. The Screenshot has been taken on a Windows 7 computer on which there is another relative option which can help you to clone your desktop to all other monitors connected to your windows computer.

In Windows XP or in Windows Vista, you will have the option to extend the desktop across other monitors , however the option to clone the primary monitor would be disabled.

As displayed in the screen shot, you can even disable the extending of desktop and you can even specify not to take any action to change the state of secondary monitor. In case you would like to change the state or mode of the secondary or primary monitors while working on your computer, you can create a dual monitor shortcut to change state or mode of the monitors connected to a windows pc.
